Legacies Photo Exhibit

Picture
Legacies is a photo exhibit that portrays Canadian women from twenty four different countries of origin. They reflect on their heritage through the eyes of their grandmothers.  They are strong, wise women, who against unimaginable odds of war, poverty and immigration became extraordinary role models for their Canadian granddaughters. The women showcased in this photo exhibit are the gatekeepers of our language and culture.

Many of the women in this exhibit were first documented in Gina Valle's book Our Grandmothers Ourselves: Reflections of Canadian Women.  Through the power of narrative, the granddaughters captured in their stories the hardship their grandmothers endured and the resilience they built to survive.  The changing family in Canada, the immigrant life,  feminism, intergenerational relationships and aging from many cultural and religious perspectives is captured in Legacies.

The universal language of the image, the photograph, creates possibilities for understanding, and gaining access into life.  Twenty-four Canadian women have gathered photos from their native homeland.  The following countries are represented in the exhibit:  Afghanistan, Algeria, China, Denmark, England, Germany, Greece, Haiti, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Japan, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Venezuela.

Each photo is accompanied by an English and French citation written by the Canadian woman and a translation of the same citation in the grandmother’s first language. To view 3 of the 24 portraits in the Legacies exhibit, click here.

Here is what people are saying about the exhibition

"In my opinion, Legacies is an extremely important exhibition, one that tastefully and respectfully presents real women and their real experiences leaving their homeland and adapting to life in Canada.  While each story is unique and personal, there is a strong universality that comes through. Best wishes in your efforts to further travel the exhibit. Fortunate are those who get to see Legacies."
